Dominion Doesn’t Have to be Bad

When the word dominion appears in Scripture (or anywhere), I immediately think of dictatorship. Dominion rings the familiar bell of domination.

And that sounds tyrannical.

But when God lifted Adam from dust and took Eve from his side, the dominion he handed them was beautiful. It was a pure and perfectly just dominion over every creature. Because no other creature was created in God’s image.

Sin capsized the boat of godly dominion. Man is prone to either abusing his authority by dominating creation, or deifying creation.

Christians must adopt God’s view of dominion. We must embrace godly stewardship.

Stewardship is practicing our authority in light of who holds the utmost authority. It governs with a loose grip because it knows everything belongs to God. It places man beneath God and creation beneath man.

[All] are yours, and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s (1 Cor. 3:22b-23).
